Fiber Optic Cable Selection Guide: Single-Mode vs Multi-Mode
Choosing the right fiber optic cable type is critical for network performance. This guide compares single-mode, multi-mode, and specialty fiber optic cables.
Single-Mode Fiber (OS2)
Single-mode fiber has a small core (9μm) and supports long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission up to 120km+. Ideal for carrier backbone networks, data center interconnects, and long-haul communications.
Multi-Mode Fiber (OM1-OM5)
Multi-mode fiber has a larger core (50μm or 62.5μm), supporting shorter distances (up to 550m). OM3/OM4/OM5 support 40G/100G networks, ideal for data center internal cabling.
How to Choose
For long distance: OS2 single-mode; For data centers: OM4/OM5 multi-mode; For short distance low-cost: OM1/OM2.
