Fiber Optic Network Troubleshooting Guide
Troubleshooting fiber optic networks requires systematic approach and proper tools. Common issues include high loss, dirty connectors, and damaged fibers.
Common Problems
Dirty connectors are the #1 cause of fiber network problems. Clean every connector before testing. High splice loss indicates poor cleave or dirty splice. Fiber breaks cause complete signal loss. Bend loss occurs when bend radius is too tight.
Testing Tools
Visual Fault Locator (VFL): Red laser for finding breaks and bends. Optical Power Meter: Measures signal strength. OTDR: Shows loss events along the fiber length and distance to faults. Inspection Microscope: Checks connector end-face quality.
Troubleshooting Steps
1. Check all connectors for dirt, clean if needed. 2. Use VFL to check for obvious breaks. 3. Measure power at transmitter and receiver. 4. Use OTDR to locate splices, connectors, and faults. 5. Verify bend radius at all transition points.
Prevention
Regular cleaning of all fiber connectors, proper cable management, maintaining bend radius, and documenting all splice points and cable routes. Train installers on proper handling and cleaning procedures.
