Complete FTTR (Fiber to the Room) whole-home fiber cabling guide. Network architecture, equipment list, installation process and best layout for different home sizes.

What is FTTR?

FTTR (Fiber to the Room) extends fiber optic cabling from the entrance to every room, providing whole-home high-speed network coverage. Compared to traditional Ethernet or Mesh WiFi, FTTR offers higher bandwidth, lower latency, and longer lifespan (25-30 years for fiber).

Key Equipment:
• Master ONT: Connected to provider network, typically a high-performance ONU/ONT device
• Optical Splitter: Divides signal to multiple rooms. Use 1:4 or 1:8 PLC splitters
• Slave ONT: Installed in each room, provides WiFi. Use XPON ONU
• Indoor Fiber: Drop cable or invisible fiber optic cable

Topology: Star (recommended) - Master → Splitter → Slave ONTs in each room. Daisy-chain is also possible.

Installation: Site survey → Design → Fiber laying → Termination (fusion splicer) → Device install → Testing (optical power meter).

For large homes/villas, use GPON OLT as core with multiple ONUs.
