GPON Split Ratio Design Guide: 1:32 vs 1:64 vs 1:128

GPON split ratio selection guide. Compare 1:32, 1:64, 1:128 split ratios for user capacity, bandwidth allocation, optical power budget.

Introduction

GPON split ratio determines how many ONUs a single OLT PON port can serve. Common split ratios: 1:32, 1:64, and 1:128. The right choice depends on bandwidth requirements, fiber infrastructure, and budget.

1:32 Split Ratio

Each ONU gets up to 77Mbps downstream (2.5Gbps shared). Best for high-bandwidth users (100Mbps+ per user). Uses 1:32 PLC splitters.

1:64 Split Ratio

Each ONU gets ~38Mbps downstream. The most common split ratio for residential FTTH deployments, balancing cost and performance.

1:128 Split Ratio

Each ONU gets ~19Mbps downstream. Lowest cost per user, suitable for basic broadband where high bandwidth is not critical.

Design Considerations

Key factors: bandwidth per user, splitter location (centralized vs cascaded), fiber availability, future scalability. PLC splitters are the standard choice for GPON networks.

Recommendation

Enterprise/Business → 1:32 | Residential FTTH → 1:64 | Basic Broadband → 1:128

Langzhi offers complete PLC splitter products for all GPON split ratio requirements.
