How GPON Works: Complete Guide to GPON Technology & Architecture

29/04/2026 Langzhi Technology

How does GPON technology work? Complete guide to GPON architecture, downstream broadcast and upstream TDMA mechanisms, wavelength allocation, and key technical parameters. From OLT to ONT, understand the full data transmission process.

What is GPON Technology?

GPON (Gigabit-Capable Passive Optical Network) is the world's leading fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology standard based on ITU-T G.984. It delivers up to 2.5Gbps downstream and 1.25Gbps upstream, supporting up to 20km transmission distance and 1:64 split ratio.

Langzhi Technology is a professional GPON equipment manufacturer offering GPON OLT and GPON ONT products.

GPON Network Architecture

1. OLT (Optical Line Terminal)

Central office equipment.Langzhi OLT from 4-port mini to chassis types.

2. ODN (Optical Distribution Network)

Fiber cables and PLC splitters divide one fiber into multiple paths.

3. ONT/ONU

User-side GPON ONT converts optical to Ethernet signals.

How GPON Works

Downstream (OLT to ONT): Broadcast at 1490nm. OLT sends data to all ONTs; each ONT extracts only its own packets.

Upstream (ONT to OLT): TDMA at 1310nm. OLT assigns time slots to each ONT to avoid collisions.

Key Parameters

  • Downstream: 2.488 Gbps
  • Upstream: 1.244 Gbps
  • Max split ratio: 1:64
  • Max distance: 20km
  • Downstream wavelength: 1490nm
  • Upstream wavelength: 1310nm
