A network cabinet (also called server rack or IT enclosure) houses and organizes your networking equipment. Choosing the right cabinet is essential for proper airflow, cable management, and equipment protection.
Standard Sizes
Network cabinets are measured in U units (1U = 1.75 inches). Common sizes include 9U (wall-mount), 12U-22U (medium floor-standing), and 27U-42U (full-size floor cabinets). Standard width is 19 inches (482.6mm). Depth varies from 400mm to 1000mm.
Types of Cabinets
Wall-Mount Cabinets: 6U-15U, ideal for small offices and FTTH distribution points. Space-saving and easy to install.
Floor-Standing Cabinets: 18U-42U, suitable for data centers and server rooms. Better ventilation and cable management.
Outdoor Cabinets: Weatherproof and temperature-controlled for telecom infrastructure and FTTH street cabinets.
Key Selection Factors
Consider equipment depth and height, ventilation needs, cable management options, security features (lockable doors), and material quality (cold-rolled steel). Also think about PDU mounting, grounding requirements, and future expansion capacity.
Accessories
Essential accessories include shelves for non-rack equipment, PDU for power management, vertical and horizontal cable managers, and fan modules. Always order a cabinet slightly larger than your current needs to allow for future growth.
