OLT vs ONU vs ONT: Fiber Optic Network Equipment Differences Explained

27/04/2026 Langzhi Technology

Understand the differences between OLT, ONU and ONT in PON fiber access networks. This guide explains each device's role, function, deployment location and how they work together in FTTH networks.

What Is an OLT (Optical Line Terminal)?

An OLT is the core device in a PON network, installed at the service provider's central office. It acts as the "brain" of the fiber network, managing all connected ONU/ONT devices, allocating bandwidth, and communicating with the upstream IP network.

Langzhi Technology offers 2-port, 4-port, 8-port and 16-port GPON/EPON OLTs compatible with Huawei, ZTE and other mainstream ONUs.

What Is ONU/ONT?

ONU (Optical Network Unit) and ONT (Optical Network Terminal) are customer-side devices that convert optical signals from fiber into Ethernet signals for user devices.

ONU vs ONT

  • ONT — ITU-T term, typically a single-user terminal in FTTH (the optical modem in your home)
  • ONU — IEEE term, typically a multi-user shared device in FTTB

Key Differences: OLT vs ONU/ONT

  • Location: OLT at central office, ONU/ONT at user premises
  • Role: OLT manages, ONU/ONT is managed
  • Scale: One OLT manages hundreds of ONU/ONT
  • Cost: OLT $100-$5000, ONU/ONT $5-$50

PON Network Architecture

A complete PON network: OLT (central office) → ODN (fiber + splitters) → ONU/ONT (user end).

How to Choose

OLT: consider port count, GPON vs EPON, uplink speed, management features. ONU/ONT: consider interface type, WiFi/VoIP needs, PON compatibility.
