The operating temperature range of optical modules is a critical yet often overlooked factor in selection. Choosing the wrong temperature grade can lead to frequent network disconnections or even equipment damage under extreme temperatures.

Optical modules are classified into three temperature grades: Commercial (0-70°C), Industrial (-40-85°C), and Extended (-20-85°C).

Commercial Grade (0-70°C)

Commercial grade optical modules are designed for temperature-controlled environments such as data centers and server rooms. They offer the lowest cost and are ideal for indoor scenarios. Commercial SFP modules are the standard choice for most indoor networks.

Industrial Grade (-40-85°C)

Industrial grade optical modules operate reliably under extreme temperatures, making them suitable for outdoor cabinets, base stations, and factory environments. They use higher quality laser chips and packaging, costing 30-50% more than commercial grade. Industrial SFP modules are ideal for 5G base stations and non-temperature-controlled outdoor scenarios.

Extended Grade (-20-85°C)

Extended grade falls between commercial and industrial, suitable for some outdoor scenarios where temperature ranges are moderate.

1. Data Center/Server Room → Commercial grade (0-70°C) for best cost efficiency

2. 5G Base Station/Outdoor Cabinet → Industrial grade (-40-85°C) for reliability
