Complete optical power meter (OPM) usage guide. Working principle, connection methods, wavelength settings, loss calculation, reference setting and fiber link troubleshooting tips.

What is an Optical Power Meter?

An OPM measures optical signal power in fiber links. It is the most basic test instrument for fiber network installation and maintenance.

Always clean connectors with fiber cleaning tools before testing. Set the wavelength to match your source (1310/1550nm for single-mode, 850/1300nm for multi-mode).

How to Test:
1. Clean all connectors
2. Set correct wavelength
3. Set reference (0dB) using a short patch cable
4. Connect the fiber link under test
5. Read the loss value in dB

Typical Loss Values:
Single-mode 1310nm: 0.35dB/km
Single-mode 1550nm: 0.25dB/km
Each connector: ≤0.5dB
Each splice: ≤0.1dB

Our basic optical fiber tester combines an OPM and light source for complete field testing.
