What is the difference between ONU and ONT in installation?

22/11/2024 Langzhi

ONU (Optical Network Unit) and ONT (Optical Network Terminal) both play crucial roles in fiber optic access networks. Although the boundaries between the two may be blurred in some scenarios, there are significant differences in their definitions, functions, and application scenarios.

Definitions and Functions

  • ONU: The ONU is a device located on the user side and is usually connected to the operator's backbone fiber optic network. Its main function is to convert the optical signal from the ODN (Optical Distribution Network) into an electrical signal and further process these signals to provide various services such as the Internet, telephone, and IPTV services to the end user.
  • ONT: The ONT focuses more on describing the device at the end user end and is directly connected to the devices in the user's home or office environment. In FTTH (Fiber To The Home) applications, the ONT usually refers to the "optical modem" installed in the user's home. It can complete the photoelectric signal conversion and provide multiple interfaces for users to connect terminal devices such as computers, telephones, and set-top boxes.

Application Scenarios and Locations

  • FTTH: In the FTTH scenario, the functions of the ONU are integrated into the ONT device, and the two are actually the same physical device. In this case, the ONT is usually called the "optical modem".
  • FTTB: In FTTB (Fiber To The Building) or other more complex network layouts, the ONU may be placed in the building's equipment room or corridor and is responsible for aggregating the information of multiple users, while the ONT is located in each user's home or office and serves as the last link for the user's personal access to the network.

Summary

ONU and ONT are usually associated with each other in fiber optic access networks, but in different situations, their roles and locations may be different. The ONT is often a part of the ONU, especially in the FTTH environment, and people often regard the two as different names for the same device.
