What is GPON and fiber?

GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) is a fiber optic network that uses a passive optical network (PON) architecture to provide high-speed Internet access to users. GPON is an access network technology that uses an optical distribution network (ODN) to provide high-bandwidth services such as voice, video and data to end users over a single fiber optic cable. GPON is capable of delivering up to 2.5 Gbps of data over a single fiber, and can also provide up to 32 services.

Fiber optics is an optical communication system in which data is transmitted through a network of glass or plastic fibers. Fiber optic cables are composed of glass or plastic strands surrounded by a protective material, such as a plastic coating. Optical signals are used to transmit data along the fiber.
