What is GPON and fiber?

GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) is a fiber optic network that uses a passive optical network (PON) architecture to provide high-speed Internet access to users. GPON is an access network technology that uses an optical distribution network (ODN) to provide high-bandwidth services such as voice, video and data to end users over a single fiber optic cable. GPON is capable of delivering up to 2.5 Gbps of data over a single fiber, and can also provide up to 32 services.

Fiber optics is an optical communication system in which data is transmitted through a network of glass or plastic fibers. Fiber optic cables are composed of glass or plastic strands surrounded by a protective material, such as a plastic coating. Optical signals are used to transmit data along the fiber. Fiber optic cables are faster and more reliable than traditional copper cables and can be used to transmit data over longer distances.
